Chantry - Marc Simonetti

A great chantry - by Marc Simonetti; ©Fantasy Flight Games

A chantry is a building where followers of the Church of Alaxon worship. They can be located in villages and urban settlements, castles, and monasteries.

Layout[]

A chantry is a single building with eight walls, though in particularly large chantries this is usually only applied to the main hall. Some chantries are small and humble while others are large and magnificent, such as the Chantry of Auri-El or the Monastery of Serene Harmony[N 1]. Some chantries have crystal or painted glass windows.

Every chantry houses representational art portraying each of the eight gods. In rural chantries, they may merely be carved masks or simple charcoal drawings on a wall, while in wealthy chantries they may be statues inlaid with precious metals and stones.

Worshipers light candles before the different altars symbolising each of the eight gods. Crystals spread eight-coloured rainbows onto altars.

Ceremonies are led by the highest ranking member of the clergy, and hymns are often sung. In the naming of a child, eight oils are used to anoint the infant. Weddings are conducted standing between the altars of Auri-El and Mara.

History[]

During the Church Uprising, Alyssare Arana spent several months flying throughout the Summerset Archipelago intentionally targeting and razing temples and chantries in retribution for the death of her son, King Daethen I.

Notes[]

  1. Because of its central position in the Church of Alaxon and its enormous size, the Monastery of Serene Harmony doubles as both a chantry and a monastery.
