The Companions are a legendary sellsword company operational throughout Skyrim. They are headquartered in Jorrvaskr in the city of Whiterun, the capital of Whiterun Hold. According to legend, the company was founded by King Ysgramor himself during the Return, at which point the Companions allegedly numbered in the 500s. While the Companions once numbered in the hundreds and operated throughout Skyrim, their numbers have dwindled in recent centuries. Despite competition from the Fighters Guild fading in the Fourth Era, the Companions have been unable to regain the initiative in taking on contracts.
The Companions hold a deep reverence for the ancient Nord king Ysgramor, and remain the keepers of his axe Wuuthrad centuries after the king's death, reflected in their emblem being the axe head of Wuuthrad. Carrying on ancient Nordic traditions, the Companions value strength and bravery in the face of adversity. This bravery is renowned throughout Skyrim, and Nords have traditionally contracted the Companions to handle threats on their behalf, ranging from a rampaging giant, to wolves terrorising farming villages, to exterminating a den of vampires.
While the Companions are first and foremost a sellsword company, it has been many centuries since they accepted contracts from kings and jarls in their political struggles. Early in the Companions' history it was decided that they would take no part in the squabbles of the high lords, instead pledging to protect the people of Skyrim directly. In this vein they have accepted contracts from kings, jarls, and thanes only insofar as the purpose of the contract is to aid the smallfolk of their domains (e.g., taking a contract from a jarl to root out a group of bandits harassing a local village).
