House Tharn was one of the most powerful Houses of Cyrodiil during the First, Second, and Third Empires. Founded in the early First Era some time before the Alessian Slave Rebellion, the Tharns have played an intimate role in the events of the empires of Men, influencing political figures, marrying into high-ranking positions, and even installing themselves as rulers of foreign lands when the opportunity presented itself. Their sigil was a white hound on a red bend against a green field, and their words were "Ever We Serve".

The family traces its lineage back to the years before Alessia I's rebellion against the Ayleid Empire, during which they joined with the Slave-Queen and successfully usurped the Ruby Throne from their Ayelid overlords. In the centuries that followed, the Tharns established themselves as a reliable and loyal House of the First Empire. Due to this inherent trust of the Tharns, as well as their well-maintained influence in Imperial politics, they were increasingly used by Emperors to subjugate and eliminate Imperial dissenters. By the time of the Interregnum of the mid-Second Era they had become one of the most powerful families in the Empire.

Despite their great influence in the empires of Men, the Tharns never held landed titles in Cyrodiil. While they owned estates all across the Nibenay Basin, none of those estates were considered House Tharn's "seat". Instead of tending to their power through traditional feudal means, the Tharns gained their power through strategic marriages, as well as occupying strategically important high offices. Nepotism was a common trend among the Tharns, and facilitated the continuation of their influence over the millennia.
