The Knights of the Flame are a knightly order established in the mid-Second Era following a heroic victory against invading Reachfolk. Since then the order has been stationed in the region of Anticlere and is devoted to its protection from any threat. Following the War of Betony the order was thrown in disarray, restored to its former standing by Lord Auberon Flyte of Alcaire and earning his House their undying loyalty. Since then, the knights have been tightly entwined with House Flyte's affairs, even serving as personal guards for some of their members.
It was common practice for the order to accept petitioners into Firebrand Keep, after which the knights would deliberate. Matters of justice, however, had to be taken up by the local lord.
History[]
The knightly order was founded in the year 2E 542 when an army of Reachfolk invaded Anticlere. Sir Byric of the Flame led a group of knights — then simply known as the Alcaire Knights — to set the surrounding fields alight, letting the wind carry the thick smoke into the invading army and allowing the knights to repel them. Following the battle, Sir Byric founded the order and named them after their heroic deed, swearing to forever protect Anticlere.
At some point after their founding the order was given a keep in Anticlere that came to be known as Firebrand Keep, becoming their headquarters. During this time the order worked closely with the Lord of Alcaire, advising him on matters of security in the region and allowing regional nobles to squire with the order's knights.
As of 2E 582 the order was led by Sir Hughes, who developed a friendship with Duke Nathaniel Cumberland, the brother of King Emeric I Cumberland of Wayrest and High King of the Daggerfall Covenant. Hughes and Nathaniel respected each other, and sought one another's counsel. Some time following Duke Nathaniel's marriage to Princess Lakana Phyllocid, Sir Hughes began suffering terrible nightmares and visions of dark futures. Unbeknownst to him, he had been possessed by the Omen of Fear, a creature in service to the Daedric Prince Vaermina. Compelled by this creature, he assassinated Princess Lakana, fearing that she would bring ruin to Anticlere. Following this drastic action, he commanded the Knights of the Flame to assault the encamped Aliki'r host outside Alcaire, which had come as an escort to a diplomat from Lakana's father, King Fahara'jad Phyllocid. His actions, as well as those of the order, inadvertently threatened to unravel the whole of the Daggerfall Covenant. Afterwards Sir Hughes fled to Firebrand Keep, at which point his apparent madness reached its peak, raving of dreams, visions, and the burning of Anticlere. De-facto command passed to Sir Croix who was intent on carrying out Hughes' commands and assault the Aliki'r host.
Some knights within the order disobeyed Sir Croix's orders after assuming the mantle of leadership, seeing that it would lead to open warfare between House Cumberland and House Phyllocid, likely turning Anticlere into a war-torn wasteland. These knights were promptly expelled from the order, although Sir Edmund refused to abandon the cause, organising a resistance force that assaulted their own keep and slew Sir Croix. Assuming command of the order himself, Sir Edmund ordered that the assault not be carried out, narrowly averting disaster. Following the mutiny, Sir Hughes was apprehended and brought to justice.
Recent Events[]
At some point in the mid-Third Era, House Flyte had assumed the Lordship of Alcaire. This led to a close-knit relationship between the lords of House Flyte and the Knights of the Flame, proving useful for the order when they were at their lowest. The War of Betony left the knights in disarray, with few knights remaining and fewer still willing to join the dilapidated order. Lord Auberon Flyte took it upon himself to guide the knights back to stability and prosperity. He even named them Anticlere's official knightly order, a position they had functionally embodied for centuries, yet for which they were never officially recognised. Recognition boosted the order's recruitment, and the continued aid from Lord Auberon ensured they did not lack for equipment.
Over time, the order became loyal to House Flyte and the people of Anticlere, and were in turn celebrated as their protectors. Some knights were even appointed to the personal guard of Lady Doryanna, Lord Auberon's wife.
It is unknown what became of the order as of the Fourth Era, but it is expected that their symbiotic relationship with the Flytes has continued unabated.
