Lord of the Stepstone Isles was a hereditary title held by the ruler of the Stepstone Isles, a series of islands off the eastern coast of Auridon in the Summerset Archipelago that were once territories of the Ayleid Empire as colonies. After House Errinorne moved their seat to Skywatch, the title was retired in favour of the honourific title Shield of the Stepstones.
History[]
When the Ayleid Empire broke off from the Altmer of the Summerset Archipelago in the Merethic Era, some holdings remained as territories of the Empire in the form of colonies. House Errinorne was granted the sparce islands so as to keep the Empire's claim on that territory intact. For House Errinorne that gift was a curse in disguise, as they would forever be isolated from the politics of the mainland, and could never advance their position.
After Aerel Arana concluded his conquest of the Summerset Archipelago, he granted his grandfather, Lord Faelian Errinorne, the small town of Skywatch on Auridon's eastern coast, bestowing upon him the title Lord of Skywatch, which Faelian bore alongside his primary title.
Eventually Skywatch grew into a sprawling city and the Errinornes moved their seat to the city, retiring their old primary title in favour of Lord of Skywatch. After they retired their old title, they took the honourific Shield of the Stepstones to denote their continued dominion over the islands.
