Mer, also known colloquially as elves, refers to the elven races of Nirn, such as the Altmer or Bosmer. Mer are known for lengthier lifespans than Man or Beast, living up to three times as long as Man depending on the race. Additionally, they tend to have fewer children, typically having only two or three, with numbers higher than that being a rarity.

Known Types of Mer[]

Various races of Mer have existed on Nirn throughout its storied history, some of which are considered extinct as of the Fourth Era.

Aldmer[]

Altmer[]

Altmer are native Mer of the Summerset Archipelago, the southwesternmost region of Tamriel. They are among the most cultured and advanced peoples of the continent, and maintain a healthy degree of separation from the other races of the vast continent. Due to their advanced culture and relatively high opinion of themselves, they are often considered 'haughty' by foreigners who mistake their high level of culture and sophistication for rudeness.

Altmer are also among longest-lived race of Mer, able to live up to 300 years without the aid of magic.

Ayleids[]

Ayleids, also known as Heartland high elves, wild elves[N 1], or Saliache, were the race of Mer native to Cyrodiil in the Merethic Era and beginnings of the First Era, known for their rare features of silver-gold hair and olive skin. The Ayleid people began their descent into extinction after the fall of the Ayleid Empire in 1E 243 at the hands of the Slave-Queen Alessia and her army of freed slaves.

Ayleids are mostly remembered for their cruelty and slavery thanks to the historical revisionism of the First Empire, though the Ayleid people contributed much to culture and arts, and laid the foundation for the many human empires that would follow them.

Just like their Altmeri cousins, Ayleids could live for up to 300 years without the aid of magic.

Notes[]

  1. The term 'Wild Elves' was used to refer to the Ayleid race after they were expelled from their own homeland by the Alessian Empire. It references how they were a people without a home.
