Morrowind is one of the nine regions of Tamriel, the largest of Nirn's known continents. The southernmost region of Morrowind is under the recent hegemony of Argonia, while the island of Vvardenfell has been rendered utterly uninhabitable by volcanic ash following the Red Year, leaving only a fraction of Morrowind's previous land to the Dunmer, the natives of the region. The closest foreign nation to Morrowind is the Third Empire, and Argonia, which occupies parts of southern Morrowind. Argonia's heartland lies to the south of Morrowind in the region of Black Marsh, home to the Argonians. To Morrowind's east lies the Padomaic Ocean, and to its north the Sea of Ghosts, where the island of Solstheim resides.
