Obsidian is the name scholars use for volcanic glass. Commonfolk from Skyrim like to say that obsidian is made by dragons, while scholars say it comes from the fires of the earth.

There are large deposits of obsidian in Vvardenfell and the Stonefalls, two sub-regions of Morrowind and as such is an export product from the region.
Obsidian is among the most frail substances one can use as a weapon, though possesses an edge akin to that of Ayleid steel and is thus used my healers to make incisions.
