Skyrim, originally called Mereth[N 1] by the first Atmoran settlers, is one of the nine regions of Tamriel, the largest of Nirn's known continents. It was a sovereign nation ruled by the Kings of Skyrim before the Tiber Wars, and continues to be ruled by them as vassals to the Third Empire. As a region of the Empire, Skyrim's closest foreign nation is the Kingdom of Hammerfell to its west across the Dragontail Mountains.
Geography[]
Skyrim is sparsely populated, with vast wilderness, forests, pine-covered hills and snow-capped mountains, speckled with tiny villages and holdfasts. Its climate is cold and harsh in winter and occasionally it will snow in summer. The north has two major land barriers, the Dragontail Mountains to the west and the Jerall Mountains to the south. Skyrim is bordered by the Sea of Ghosts to the north.
The Blue Palace, the ancestral seat of House X, is a large castle located in the city of Solitude in Haafingar, the northwestern region of Skyrim. Relatively nearby is the town of Dragon Bridge. The vast Pine Forest, the largest forest of northern Tamriel, extends southwest across Falkreath. The city of Falkreath, the seat of House X, lies in the central Pine Forest. House X rules North Keep in northwestern Falkreath. The X Mountains extend across the northern border of Falkreath along the southern border of Whiterun.
Whiterun is relatively flat terrain with a small mountain in its centre. Granitehall, seat of House X, is located by Whiterun's western border dividing Whiterun from the Reach. In Whiterun's northeast is the city of Whiterun, seat of House X and the primary trading city of Skyrim. Southeast of the city of Whiterun is the town of Riverwood, ruled by House X.
West of Haafingar, Whiterun, and Falkreath is the Reach, the furthermost western region of Skyrim, scattered with rocky cliffs and mountains. House X rules rules the large town of Markarth Side. There are unnamed rivers which flow south from Haafingar and near the southern border of the Reach.
East of Haafingar and northeast of Whiterun is the Pale, the second coldest region of Skyrim forming the border with Winterhold to the west. A vast plain and a small forest, the Pale is home to many fishing villages; House X rules from the city of Dawnstar. The ruined castle of Laintar Dale controls access to the Pale from both Winterhold and Eastmarch. It is here the Kings of Western Skyrim held off eastern invasions from the Kings of Eastern Skyrim during the warring period of XE XXX.
East of the Pale and north of Eastmarch is the region of Winterhold. The ruined city of Winterhold, home of House X, is located on its northeastern shore, while giant glaciers are located along its eastern and northwestern shores, respectively. South of Winterhold is the city of Windhelm and the region of Eastmarch.
Eastmarch is Skyrim's easternmost region, dotted with many volcanic pools and lakes, save for the northernmost stretch of the region along the coast which is known for its colder temperatures. The Palace of the Kings, the seat of House X, is located in the city of Windhelm in northern Eastmarch along the coast. The X River runs west to the Pale. South of Windhelm is Kynesgrove, the seat of House X, while farther south is X, the seat of House X, which controls access to the Rift's western entryway. The X mountains separates southern Eastmarch from the northern Rift.
Mistveil Keep, the seat of House X, is located in Riften in the Rift. Fall Forest lies in the centre of the Rift, south of the X3, the seat of House X. The X3 lies near the X River, which flows from X Lake east to the X Lake on on the coast of which Riften was built. North of Riften sits Green Wood, seat of House X, which protects the Rift's eastern pass from Eastmarch. In the far west of the Rift is the castle of Sunguard, seat of House X, which protects the Rift's two western passes that lead to both Eastmarch and Falkreath.
Between the Rift, Falkreath, and Whiterun sits the Throat of the World, the tallest mountain in Tamriel and home to the Greybeards who reside in their secluded home of High Hrothgar.

Sentient Species[]
- The native race of Man, the Nords, are the most widespread and dominant people of Skyrim, claiming hegemony over the entire region.
- Giants are huge, shaggy humanoids of below human intelligence. Giants are a dwindling species. They ride mammoths into battle, wielding crude clubs that are little more than logs. They speak their own unknown and unstudied language.
