The stormcloaks are the faction of House Stormcloak and their loyalists that support the ascent of Ulfric Stormcloak as King of Skyrim during the Stormcloak Rebellion. They are opposed by the Third Empire and House X of Solitude.
The stormcloaks took the name of House Stormcloak as their own, though are distinguished from the noble House due not capitalising the 's' in the name. I.e., members of House Stormcloak are Stormcloaks, but those who support the Stormcloaks in the rebellion are merely known as stormcloaks.
The stormcloaks will sometimes display Ulfric's sigil with inverted colours to represent their faction rather than his House, though such banners are rarely seen; carried only by a scant few.
