The Three Banners War was a large, multi-theatre conflict fought in Tamriel from 2E 580 until 2E 601 and lasting a total of twenty-one years, making it one of Tamriel's longest-fought wars. As the name implies, three grand alliances fought for control of the Marble Throne in Cyrodiil, which would have been the key to a later conquest of the entire continent. The three alliances were the Ebonheart Pact, led by Jorunn III Flame-Hair, the Second Daggerfall Covenant, led by Emeric I Cumberland, and the First Aldmeri Dominion, led by Ayrenn I Arana.
The war was fought to a standstill for nineteen years until 2E 599, when Queen Ayrenn I unleashed her gryphons upon Cyrodiil and led a bloody conquest through the region. She would later be assassinated by her lover, X, after it became clear to him that she had turned into a monster that would reign as a tyrant over Tamriel. Following her death, the first trans-Tamrielic Great Council was called, where the battle-weary alliances negotiated an end to the 21-year conflict in the wake of Ayrenn's atrocities.
