The Vulkhel Guard Plot was a failed assassination plot against Queen Ayrenn I Arana of the Summerset Isles in 2E 282, and the inciting event of the Veiled Rebellion which consumed much of Auridon.
Background[]
The assassination plot was hatched at an unknown time prior to Queen Ayrenn I Arana's royal progress of Auridon by members of the Veiled Heritance, coordinated by the Veiled Queen, as part of a conspiracy to seat Prince Naemon Arana on the Marble Throne of Alinor.
Queen Ayrenn had only recently returned to the Summerset Archipelago after putting aside her rights to the throne in favour of a life of adventure abroad. During those long years her brother Naemon was the assumed heir-apparent to their father, King Hidellith II Arana, and underwent all the traditional ceremonies of a king-in-waiting. Upon the death of King Hidellith and Ayrenn's sudden return to the Isles in 2E 280, she declared her intention to claim the Marble Throne by birthright. Unwilling to risk open war, Prince Naemon stepped aside and bent the knee to his sister.
Already a scandalous start to an Altmeri monarch's reign, Queen Ayrenn further declared her intention to form the First Aldmeri Dominion and seize the Ruby Throne of Cyrodiil from the ailing Empire of Men. An isolationist people by custom, many of the Queen's new subjects struggled to see the wisdom in this naked ambition. However, even those fears could have been assuaged with time. It was not until Queen Ayrenn began importing large numbers of wood elves and Khajiit into Auridon that the tide of public opinion decisively turned against her, and whispers of dissent took root.
The Plot[]
Unwilling to see their land overrun with lesser races, a group of Altmer under the guidance of the Veiled Queen formed a resistance group known as the Veiled Heritance, with the goal of unseating Queen Ayrenn in favour of her brother Naemon. By 2E 282 they had enough support, especially in Vulkhel Guard to take action.
Captain Astanya Salingal of the city watch, already a sworn sister of the Heritance, was tasked with arranging tactical weaknesses in the city's security during the Queen's stay for her royal progress. This would be exploited by Heritance members, including the city watch itself, to infiltrate Ayrenn's protections and covertly assassinate her.
