The Welkynar, also known poetically as the Gryphon Knights, were the ancient gryphon-riding protectors of the Summerset Archipelago. Regarded as the finest knights in the Summerset Isles, they were sworn to protect the realm from major threats, particularly from invading forces. They were forbidden from being sworn to any single ruler, and thus did not get involved in the politics or internal wars of the realm, instead being sworn to protect the land from outside threats. The Welkynar were sworn for life and were forbidden from owning land, taking a spouse, or having children. They were not even permitted to hold non-hereditary positions such as being Warden of the Isles.
